Is it time to change your Blog Keywords?

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

  • Does it seem hard to get desired rankings for your blogs?
  • Does the keyword your blog is based on does not bring in expected traffic?
  • Do you want to find how hard your competition is?

Then do this----------
  1. Go to Google to find your API key(if you already have one then skip the following steps and read below).
  2. By following the instructions google is providing you will recieve this key in your email account.
  3. It would be string of characters we will need while checking the tool for google for your blog keywords.
The first tool is a keyword research tool which will tell you how hard the competition is for you. It is Search Guild's Keyword Research Difficulty Cheker. This page at Search Guild access Google's database of search terms to determine the difficulty level for ranking for a certain keyword.

After putting in the API key and the keyword in required boxes you would get a score. The higher it is the difficult it is to get ranking for that term. It would also return a ranking of "HARD", "INTERMEDIATE" or "EASY", for your blog keyword.

I am not saying you should not aim at all for such keywords, but it takes time, and as we all perhaps know the fact that TIME=MONEY, it is better not to waste time. For the begining aim for more targetted and less competitive keywords in your market for your blog. When the traffic starts coming in you can target for broader keywords.

What is API?

API

(Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. APIs are implemented by writing function calls in the program, which provide the linkage to the required subroutine for execution. Thus, an API implies that some program module is available in the computer to perform the operation or that it must be linked into the existing program to perform the tasks.

Can You Imagine people can actually steal your Blog!!!!

Friday, August 25, 2006

I did not imagine that myself but had to when I read a report on it today...............................................................................

Today I read a report on Black Hat Blogging Techniques.......Rest were imaginable but this one shocked me enough to jump around and check all the blogs I created till date......

To get rid of useless blogs and blogs that are just created to gain profit, Blogger started deleting the blogs sometimes at random and sometimes under the supervision of an employ who decides it as useless. What happened and even happens today is that they still delete the blogs.

So they deleted lots of useless blogs and sometimes in the process blogs with thousands of backlinks and high search engine rankings and even a very good page rank. So I wore my detective cap and set out to check if what the report says was true or not. I found that a blog which ranked two for a keyword which has more than 200,000 searches were done per month got deleted.

It was so awesome.......... you create a blog, promote it, do anything to get inbound links and high rankings and blogger deletes it. From today itself, please check all your blogs daily for atleast their existense.

Now here is a worst case scenario, people can steal away your hard work......
What I read further had my eyes popping out of their sockets. People steal these blogs. What happens when these blogs get deleted the backlinks still exist and even do there search engine existence and even the rank is maintained. and MSN even keeps it's ranking for a few days. People come along and search a keyword and find a blog. It has a error page saying the blog is no longer available........ They go to Blogger.com and register that blog. Now they have a blog with incoming links, all within twenty minutes and so...............

Think of the possibilities.......... all your hard work can go down the drain that very easily.............
Be careful with your own blogs....... Dont let anybody else steal them from you...........

Some Tips on Blogging

Its been time I have been into internet marketing and have been researching about various things including how to make money on net, blogging ant tagging, and ofcourse pinging and RSS etc. Well, to get to the core of it-" The core of internet marketing is very simple, but it takes a research to understand its simplicity".....
As Marketing Gurus say it takes only a month to earn money but they do not mention that it takes a year to understand how to make money. Blogging is one of the ways to make money easily without much to understand. It is so because blogging is nothing but Web dialogue... A way to express your thoughts in your own words. There are no fundamentals or techniques when blogging is mentioned but still there are a few things to keep in mind.
1. There are few changes in the settings area when you make your blog, like notifying weblogs and making your blog public.
2. Your blogs should be organically optimised.
3. You should make frequent visits to other blogs and post comments. This in turn makes you a known blogger.
4. Generating links to your own website is one of the common things that a blogger should do.
5. Add Featured blogs and other interesting resources that would help your reader.

About Meta Tags

Using Meta-tags effectively
Meta-tags are the first thing Search Engines see. It's absolutely critical to your website optimization strategy.
Meta-tags are important to many search engines. While not all are still using them to categorize your website, many still use them to rank and prioritize your site. Meta-tags provide you the webmaster with a concise way of categorizing and defining your website. Don't believe that they aren't important, but proper usage is. Search engines have algorithms to prevent abuse and misleading information giving your site more weight. Don't cheat.

Keep META Tags Concise
Don't use the description and keywords section of the meta-tags to give too much information. Realize that search engine databases are finite, and they do manage space. Keep your tags short and simple, and remember that search engines will penalize you for misusing or overusing meta-tags.

Use Proper Case

While this used to work many years ago, it's just not true anymore. Search engines don't want to display information in all caps, anymore than you want to look at it. Rest assured that you WILL GET PENALIZED for using all caps, and just don't do it.

If Possible, Avoid Doorway Pages

Doorway pages (Sometimes called bridge pages), redirect another user to a different page. These pages clutter up the search results and are really starting to upset people. You should note that using doorway pages is against Google's (and most SE's) terms of service. Doorway pages are mostly associated with the META Refresh Tag. Know what Keywords are Important to Optimize Your Page!
Some search engines only read the first portion of your webpage. Make sure your keywords and descriptions are accurate. We went over this above but I felt it was important enough that I had to stress how important this was for your on-site optimization.

Place Meta-tags at the Top of Your Document

View the source of a couple of highly ranked websites and get an idea of what their meta-tags look like. No need to re-invent the wheel here. A meta-tag always goes in the same place above the body inside the "" tag.

Basically there are two types of Search Engine Optimization:-
• Online optimization
• Offline optimization
Online optimization is where we take care of the designing part of the page that would include the header tags, meta tags, title tag and various other things like keyword density and your content.

Content Optimization- Content is the king online and everybody knows about it. A page must have lots of content for being listed by search engines. It is stated that a page should have between 500 and 800 words of quality, unique content. It should be divided into 3 to 5 paragraphs with different and dedicated to the paragraph headlines. As for the keywords, they should appear at least once in first phrase of the first paragraph with other two elsewhere in the same; thrice in last paragraph(once in the last phrase); and twice in every middle paragraph.
The keyword density must be somewhere between 2% to 8%, but its always better to have 4%-5%. The keyword density formula can be written as D=KW/TW
D= density
KW= No. of Keywords
TW= No. of Total words

Tags-

Header Tags- The most important header tags are H1 and H2. The main header tag is H1 which is used only once a page. It should appear on the top left corner of the page and should include the main keyword at least once and maximum twice (keeping in mind that the sentence formed is meaningful and as short as possible so that you do not confuse your human visitors and search engines regard you as a spam).
The second header tag is H2. This must lead any of paragraphs and should contain the main idea of that para. At least 50% should have your keyword in them. This should form longer sentence including various words as compared to H1.

Title Tags- The title tag is inserted in the HEAD area of the web page.
Normally people tend to use only two common titles that are-‘Welcome to our site’ and ‘Company Name’. But both of them are wrong titles as they do not contain any information of what is your site all about and search engines got to know it before they rank your site higher.
Things that should be remembered before writing the Title tag-
• A correct title should contain only your keyword.
• More than two keywords should be combined if possible, (for ex. Successful Weight Loss and Weight Loss Stories should be written as Successful Weight Loss Stories).
• Always replace “and” with “|”
• Try to use the minimum no. of words in the Title

Bolding, Italicizing, Underlining, Strengthening-

The place where our keywords need more importance they should be bolded, italicized, underlined or strengthened. But there is a point that should be ALWAYS kept in mind, do not use each of these effects more than one time in the text otherwise your site can be considered a spam. So, apparently you have four places to do so. If you cannot find that many places where your keywords should be emphasized two effects can be used together, such as bold or strong with italic and underlined with any of the rest three.

Just keep in mind that it is very essential that your content is interesting and friendly for your visitors. Even though search engine can bring potential customers and sales only occur when you put across the right message. SEO is good but the ultimate goal is to sell product and earn cash, so your priorities are your customers and not search engine spiders…..

Much current SEO thinking on what works and what doesn't is largely speculation and informed guesses. Some SEOs have carried out controlled experiments to gauge the effects of different approaches to search optimization.
The following, though, are some of the considerations search engines could be building into their algorithms, and the list of Google patents may give some indication as to what is in the pipeline:
• Age of site
• Length of time domain has been registered
• Age of content
• Regularity with which new content is added
• Age of link and reputation of linking site
• Standard on-site factors
• Negative scoring for on-site factors (for example, a dampening for sites with extensive keyword meta tags indicative of having being SEO-ed)
• Uniqueness of content
• Related terms used in content (the terms the search engine associates as being related to the main content of the page)
• Google Pagerank (Only used in Google's algorithm)
• External links, the anchor text in those external links and in the sites/pages containing those links
• Citations and research sources (indicating the content is of research quality)
• Stem-related terms in the search engine's database (finance/financing)
• Incoming backlinks and anchor text of incoming backlinks
• Negative scoring for some incoming backlinks (perhaps those coming from low value pages, reciprocated backlinks, etc.)
• Rate of acquisition of backlinks: too many too fast could indicate "unnatural" link buying activity
• Text surrounding outward links and incoming backlinks. A link following the words "Sponsored Links" could be ignored
• Use of "rel=nofollow" to suggest that the search engine should ignore the link
• Depth of document in site
• Metrics collected from other sources, such as monitoring how frequently users hit the back button when SERPs send them to a particular page
• Metrics collected from sources like the Google Toolbar, Google AdWords/Adsense programs, etc.
• Metrics collected in data-sharing arrangements with third parties (like providers of statistical programs used to monitor site traffic)
• Rate of removal of incoming links to the site
• Use of sub-domains, use of keywords in sub-domains and volume of content on sub-domains… and negative scoring for such activity
• Semantic connections of hosted documents
• Rate of document addition or change
• IP of hosting service and the number/quality of other sites hosted on that IP
• Other affiliations of linking site with the linked site (do they share an IP? have a common postal address on the "contact us" page?)
• Technical matters like use of 301 to redirect moved pages, showing a 404 server header rather than a 200 server header for pages that don't exist, proper use of robots.txt
• Hosting uptime
• Whether the site serves different content to different categories of users (cloaking)
• Broken outgoing links not rectified promptly
• Unsafe or illegal content
• Quality of HTML coding, presence of coding errors
• Actual click through rates observed by the search engines for listings displayed on their SERPs
• Hand ranking by humans of the most frequently accessed SERPs

An Introduction to Tag and Ping

Wednesday, August 02, 2006

Website owners know it is very important to have a good ranking with all the major search engines, but this ranking can be difficult, and expensive, to obtain. It needs expertise and lots of time of the web master. Where search engine optimization is such a voluminous task there is a much better way, to drive traffic to your site, and it does not rely on the search engines. Tagging is a great way of doing so. Not only does it drive traffic and it finds targeted visitors, and the good part is it does not rely on search engines.

What is Tagging?
A tag is like a subject or category. This page shows the most popular tags, starting with the ones that are hottest today. The bigger the text, the more active that tag is.

For example
A webpage hosted on a web server or blog server which supports tagging, might have the tags Baseball, News, Tickets, Internet Marketing (tags can be more than one word), and Discounts. Anyone can instantly tell the purpose of the page by quickly going through the list of tags. Typically, there would be a list of tags on that page, with each tag displayed as a web link leading to an index page listing all web pages under that particular tag. This will allow a reader to quickly find all pages which have been associated with the term Tickets.

Many new social networking sites have changed the nature of the internet. Using these kinds of bookmarking sites is a great way to maximize traffic, but it is important to know how to use these sites to their maximum benefit. If you simply tag blog posts without a
strategy you will not be able to obtain the exposure and the targeted traffic you are aiming for, so it is important to carefully research the subject before getting started.

You have to fully understand the working of sites like Flickr, Technorati and Del.icio.us, how the search engines work and a careful analysis of the results obtained in a couple of test blog posts. A thorough analysis will likely lead you to the conclusion that
tagging is a powerful tool indeed.

Social bookmarking is simply a way for users to store a list of their bookmarks, or
favorite site, online. In order to understand the power of tagging it is important to
understand the concept of social bookmarking. However, there are no semantics of what a tag is and how should it be placed. For example a tag Apple, might refer to the fruit, Apple Computer, the Beatles' music label, or Gwyneth Paltrow's baby.Tag clouds can help with it.

A tag cloud (more traditionally known as a weighted list in the field of visual design) is a visual depiction of content tags used on a website. Often, more frequently used tags are depicted in a larger font or otherwise emphasized, while the displayed order is generally alphabetical. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. Selecting a single tag within a tag cloud will generally lead to a collection of items that are associated with that tag. However, you have no source course to add into your website to add Tag Cloud.

The first widely known tag cloud appeared on Flickr, the photo sharing site. That implementation was based on Jim Flanagan's Search Referral Zeitgeist, a visualization of web site referrers. Tag clouds have also been popularised by Technorati, among others.
