5 ways to Monetize your blog

Sunday, May 25, 2008

Blogging may be a primary source of income for a few but a secondary source of income for many. Some people have strong personal feelings with respect to making money from their blogs. If you think commercializing your blog is unethical, greedy, obnoxious, or anything along those lines, then don’t commercialize it.

If you want to succeed, you must be congruent. Generating income from your blog is challenging enough. If you want to make money from your blog and you have a reasonable amount of traffic then the methods of advertising you use will quickly become an important topic to you. There are a lot of different ways to monetize a blog, and it would be damaging of me to try and tell you exactly what method will work without knowing at least a little about your blog. However, there are some things we will willingly share.

However one of these tips will surely help you to have a better productivity and results

Advertising- is easily the most popular blog monetization tactic, easy to implement and still well paid. The ads you place in your blog can either be contextual ads, or display ads.
Contextual ads are provided by various services, the most common one being Google Adsense. The other options are Yahoo Publisher Network, Clicksor, Adsonar and Chitika. My sincere advice is not to limit your blog to a particular type of ad network. Though most of the bloggers think Adsense is best for them, it may not gel well with every niche topic, and it’s not easy to manually test all these. Using a ad network management tool like RMX Direct can help you manage, evaluate, and control your various ad networks.

Don't Sell Out – Services like Pay per Post and Sponsored Reviews may sound appealing for earning a few dollars, but my only suggestion can be summed up in one or two words- “Don’t” or “Do Not”. There's a temptation for those with more mature blogs to write a post and review an item, website, or service and get paid for doing so. You might have the best intentions and might think that you can write a genuinely informative piece and be completely unbiased, open and honest without your readers ever realizing what you are doing but it is highly unlikely that this is the case.

Sponsorship – Getting sponsorship for your blog, is a great way of monetizing them. If you own a niche sensitive blog, more focused to a topic, it will be likely that you bag sponsored ads as it will be a viable advertising solution for advertisers.

Affiliate Links – If you cover a particular niche in your blog, there is a large chance of finding products which are interesting and helpful to your users. You can recommend the products you think will do well for your users after becoming the product’s affiliate member. Providing them affiliate links will earn you some nice income recommending or linking to those products.

Merchandising- If you're a well-loved blogger, there's a good chance that your readers would like to show their support. Give them what they want and make money by taking advantage of merchandising opportunities. Cafepress allows you to write innovative quotes and makes it easy for you to put your blog's logo on shirts, bags, coasters and other items. Companies like Goodstorm, Lulu, and others make it easy by creating the products based on your design and letting you set up a shop. There is no risk to bloggers, which makes it a great opportunity.

Google’s Billion Dollar Game Plan

Monday, January 29, 2007

Its high time you stop running around following self acclaimed Search Engine Marketers and gurus, when you can build your Online business empire. Focusing on your business to make it world class should be the most important thing for you. Interactive blogs/sites where visitor need is the focus, do more business rather than highly optimized sites. These sites easily get a page rank of 4 and with a bit of focus on their marketing strategies yields a 5 or 6 PR. Google wants you to do the same. No amount of SEO would help till you do not have good traffic to your site.

Well you would say SEO will bring traffic to your site, and I would agree with you contradicting my own statement, but you need many other traffic resources to fulfill the your need of increasing your prospect base.

Link building is one of the ways your gurus will tell you to put your efforts and money in. If your blog is running good, or even if it is just upcoming you will have to handle many link exchange requests. They not yet realize that link exchange is of no use now and was technique of the past. Search engines became aware of the fact that webmasters are trying to lead them into believing their pseudo popularity, and started to discount such strategies. They will award a PR of 2 to such cases.

Links from link purchase are also considered non earned and is not effective any more. This is leading to a downfall of link selling business which was once much hyped. The basic motive of link purchase and link exchange was for SEO and generating traffic, which was not very useful for either of them. Google now takes care that people follow the long and natural way to make these links. According to its official blog:-
“[…]Google has tremendously refined its link-weighting algorithms. We have more people working on Google's link-weighting for quality control and to correct issues we find. So nowadays, undermining the PageRank algorithm is likely to result in the loss of the ability of link-selling sites to pass on reputation via links to other sites. Discounting non-earned links by search engines opened a new and wide field of tactics to build link-based popularity: Classically this involves optimizing your content so that thematically-related or trusted websites link to you by choice.[…]” To read the rest of the article you can click here.

Now what is the game I am talking about. What everybody knows is that Google is the master of all the search engine traffic. With all this strictness coming into scene the money being invested in the above techniques is left on the table. The biggest under cover game of Google

From where do Google earns? It has a giant infrastructure and all services it offers are free. So how do they get the funds to maintain these services. The only place where Google generates income is through advertising which is better known as their Adwords program, and the only way you can generate targeted traffic is by advertising for your site in their sponsored results.

All the content of your site and the hard work that goes into it will only give you a few cents each click on the adsense ads placed on your blog/site, while Google earns in million of dollars using your very own efforts, because the bulk of adsense usage.

If you want to earn a few dollars from these ads you will need a lot of traffic to your site, and where will the traffic come from till your site is not on the top of result pages? From investing in their Adwords. Who is the master, Google, and who is dancing to its tunes, we the webmasters who want to earn their bread and butter or a Merc from our online business.

If you want to make your own rules, then play the game differently to get the ball in your court. Google does pay you a little price for the labor you put in the right direction. What it stresses on is to make links naturally and organically or by Linkbaiting. The more focused your site is, the more targeted and better quality ads you’ll get. Another point to notice is the stress on using Social Media sites like Digg.
Other lines from the same article says:-
“[…]Discounting non-earned links by search engines opened a new and wide field of tactics to build link-based popularity: Classically this involves optimizing your content so that thematically-related or trusted websites link to you by choice. A more recent method is link baiting, which typically takes advantage of Web 2.0 social content websites. One example of this new way of generating links is to submit a handcrafted article to a service such as digg.com. Another example is to earn a reputation in a certain field by building an authority through services such as http://answers.yahoo.com. Our general advice is: Always focus on the users and not on search engines when developing your optimization strategy. Ask yourself what creates value for your users. Investing in the quality of your content and thereby earning natural back links benefits both the users and drives more qualified traffic to your site.[…]”

Don’t hang around asking for links anymore. Give people reasons to link you. Be the champion of your own game like Google is. Make your rules and let others play by it. Be the pioneer of new methodologies which are ethical and safe. Build your business. All the self made SEO gurus are in reality amateurs and do not know what actually SEO is. A successful SEO expert knows to assess the nerve of visitor’s psychology, how they come, where they click and where lies the potential traffic source. Its not about Search Engines its about you and your visitors, because business is made of Humans not Search Engine Robots. Follow Google’s advice to beat it and it will love you for making it loose.

Cheers To your Success,

Enough… Make your blog work.

Monday, December 04, 2006

A Word of Caution:- Core and serious bloggers might find the information in this post disgusting.

In many of my post like exact mindset of blogging, I said that it’s your part and your job to make your readers read your content. But How to get your blog content more consumed?
Blogging can be done for many reasons, like for improving visibility of your website, for improving Adsense revenue, making yourself more known by improving your feeds distribution and building incoming links.. All these are the reasons why most of the people start blogging.

It is more for providing more relevant information, more instantly who subscribe to those blogs. This is best handled by technology blogs who actually do have most frequent updates, this makes people more and more attracted towards starting technology blog. The game is simple for many who know how the direction of the tide and the way to ride it.

How do bloggers earn Adsense income using blogs without even writing posts, most simple but effective way?

Though this is not my favorite way and neither do I recommend it, but bloggers do follow it and earn in thousands using adsense.

If you simply want to earn good Adsense income and revenue by just putting ads in your blog, it can be done by using the given in these steps:
  • Look for best content blogs who owns the fresh content as well can be trusted source of information.
  • Subscribe to their feeds and put them into your blog. Its important to give link back to the websites/blogs from where you are taking the feeds. You can very easily manage a blog by directly feeding your blog using “RSS to HTML”
  • Put your Adsense ads between these feeds. Bloggers generally match them and many quite questionably put their ads before their content, on the top. Put your some brains, a little bit of innovation, no breakthroughs required and you are done.
Writing posts is a very obvious way to create good name on internet. You can even follow both methods using your niche related RSS feeds and writing good and relevant posts. Optimize your blog. Publicize your own feeds, ping quite often, even twice a day if you have that many updates, and if you already own an optimized blog, which show up in search engine results, it could turn into a money machine.

For most people its fine but there is a totally different group of bloggers who are into totally different plan.

Almost every blogger wants to be an Authority blogger but in order to do so a few loose their track by making their blog too complex. They try to be far more idealistic than realistic.
They lag in most important concept of civilization i.e. Communication. Blogs are for communicating which should be in a simple and an effective way. Things, which are very successful, are very easily acceptable by the community. So many times on the Internet anything appearing to be complex from outside are of no use when thoroughly explored. Most carry Hype and then turn out to be a total waste of time and effort it took to create all the hype and seriously out of business.

I was into a good read few days back where I learned how communities in Digg and in similar sites are created by just building democratic groups. Most people vote for each other stories so as to gain position on their desired keywords or tags. Many bloggers keep on trying to make their post more diggable. Many have written and most people keep on writing about how to get your post dugg.

Here is a crude truth and should be known by all new bloggers, who want to create good income through proper blogging.
  1. Your blog Page rank should be really good. It should be at least 6. You need to already have a big fan club or big community and you have already build reputation among all your readers and even among new visitors. You need to know how you should write your content so that readers should read it and hypnotically vote it or bookmark it.This is pure Blogging, as an opportunity, and cashing it to its max without any core business behind it. After all we are part of Information Revolution and where you can actually resell or even Upsell information. To get here you have an obvious solution, which do require about 6 months time. It’s your blog design, SEO and usability of your blog.
  2. Building a circle of bloggers that votes for your blog. You vote for their blog and they return the favor, this will put you in top of your niche keyword and tags. Many people oppose this idea and take this as spamming. Though it cant be regarded as purely illegal as everybody has a right to bookmark and vote for their desired posts. It effects that lot who don’t use it or who cant build these kind of circles.
  3. Technorati doesn’t discount reciprocal links. So you can very easily exchange links from as many blogs as possible and get your blog to the top position for your technorati tags. This may not be very valuable from search engine point of view. But it does benefit being at top of technorati as it give your blog a much needed exposure.
So if you find these methods ethical, go forward and use them. A point I would like to mention here is that people use them and it also helps them to make them popular. If you totally believe in being an Authority Blog, it is sure to increase your reach, But I would still mention DON’T COMPROMIZE THE QUALITY OF YOUR BLOG, and try being a long term player. Use these methods if you wish to apart from your quality blogging to increase your visibility but don’t just use these forgetting about what information you provide to the world. Your blog is meant for other people to benefit from. Don’t give them crap. It would degrade your blogs appeal and then you can forget about returning visitors.

To your Success,
Divya Uttam

Keyword Research and Adsense Income.

Sunday, November 26, 2006

Rules to Know before you play the Brain’s Game

If you have a little knowledge about the kind of shots taken in a film I’ll call this a cut-away post. Here I wont directly be talking about what to do with your blog or how to optimize blogging but something that almost every blogger who is using adsense should know.

While working for the same keywords and under same niche I serve Google Adsense as well place our Google Adwords, I made a few major discoveries. Both of these services are very important to internet marketers as well as bloggers and they serve as the two basic streams of online income to most. We basically give a dollar for our ads placed and in return giving a click to Google for same ad we earn 40- 50 cents. That can be counted as 2:1 ratio. For every adwords visitor we need the two clicks on the adsense to cover the expenditure.

So I had two different prospective of working under same niche and want to earn and be profitable from both.

From my prospective of advertisements I want keywords that people are looking for aggressively, convert well and turn out to produce good ROI. Before you place your money on those adwords a bit of keyword research is necessary. You should keep in mind the following:-
  1. Pay far less prices for your adwords clicks.
  2. Bid on good converting keywords and leave negative keywords.
  3. The conversion of your landing pages should be administered and it would be much better if you can design keyword specific landing pages. This can be done by grouping specific types of keywords and developing more relevant landing pages. This way your quality score would be much better thus improving your bid prices.
  4. Here is one more $100 tip for you. This would even help you in building your list quite easily. Most of the times gurus tell to go in for long tail keywords. Don’t do this if you want to place your ads on search engines. Optimize your site for these kind of keywords rather than wasting your resources on them. You can get this traffic organically from search engines by developing keyword relevance. But how can you benefit for your Adwords campaign. Here is the trick. Go for long-tail keyword and intentionally opt for content ads, and now your ads would be placed on more relevant websites and you can snatch their traffic quite easily. This would also reduce your pay per click amount. With your savings you can go in for other convertible keywords.

For Adsense prospective we had to concentrate on these main issues:
  1. Continuous stream of targeted traffic.
  2. Without loosing your own traffic which could either convert as your customer for your products or a future prospect, we need to produce clicks on adsense.
  3. Developing more keyword relevant blog/website to get more and more targeted web traffic by organic search engine optimization, which would prove beneficial for long term. This would again be done using keyword relevance.
  4. Making good landing pages. Having search engine friendly websites helps a lot in making high quality score landing pages.
  5. How to combine Adwords account with your Adsense to literally place your ads just not free but for net profit. Have a thought about Google Arbitrage.

A typical keyword analysis would provide you with enough knowledge not just to get similar traffic for less amount, which may be literally free for your website and later you can get all this traffic which could be acquired for quite high paying adwords ads, organically. It is extremely important to understand your competition, the profitability and the amount of money and time you invest. Using industry-developed tools for specific jobs can make it easier for people to be more professional. It can all be done in a lot more aggressive and result oriented way.
